Radio update

I’ve been so busy that I neglected this space for so long. I’m so glad that I decided to make time for this update. First things first, happy new year. Here’s to another amazing year of prosperity and more of that ka-ching!

To the business of the day: There’s been so much happening on the radio front. Former child star, Hulisani Ravele (formerly known as Cecelia ‘Cece’ Ravele) announced her departure from Limpopo-based radio station, Capricorn FM, it has since been announced and she’s been welcomed to the 947 family. She already has two shows under her belt at 947. She co-hosts the 947 Weekend Breakfast with Lusky.

Still on the 947 tip, remember the ridiculous 5 hour-show by Ayanda MVP? I’m so excited that Grant Nash (new Programme Manager at 947) came and stirred the pot, as a result, the station brought in a long time KFM presenter to the big city. Andy Maqondwana will take over the first half of what was Ayanda’s show for a good year. The new 947 kicks off on Monday (24 January 2019) and it looks a little something like this:

05h00 to 06h00: Alex Caige

06h00 to 09h00: 947 Breakfast Club

09h00 to 12h00: Andy Maqondwana

12h00 to 15h00: Ayanda MVP

15h00 to 19h00: Greg & Lucky

19h00 to 22h00: Zweli & Mantsoe

22h00 to 24h00: Date Night (Mon-Thu)

19h00 to 22h00: Karabo N (Fri)

22h00 to 24h00: Chrizz Beatz (Fri)

The weekday lineup is the only one that matters, really. There’s still a lot of automated shows, I’m hoping this will be changed in the next radio cycle.

The last part of 2018 saw the return of Xolani Gwala back on the airwaves at 702. Xolani disappeared while still anchoring the 702 Breakfast Show. It was later announced that he was suffering from colon cancer. Fast forward to a year later, he came back banging and stronger. I’m super excited and inspired by Xolani’s story of triumphant.

Elana Afrika made a Joburg and radio comeback last year. She moved back to the city of gold after she was announced as Mack Rapapali’s replacement on Jacaranda FM’s ‘Workzone’. The show is between 9am – noon every weekday. Welcome back, Elana!

Over at YFM, vlogger, Sibu Mpanza joined Carissa Cupido as a co-host on #RunThisTown between 7 – 10pm. Meanwhile, in Cape Town, CapeTalk welcomed seasoned broadcast journalist, Lester Kiewit in December. Lester started his new evening show on the 6th Jan 19.

As the big April radio fiasco approaches, I wonder what other stations have up their sleeves.

Radio: A Melting Pot That Keeps on Giving

So, listen up…

There’s been quite a lot of things happening in the world of radio over the past couple of months, and I thought let me just put you up to speed with the latest. Now, here’s the tea… BEWARE, it’s hot!

Since the last time I gave you guys the scoop on the broadcasting world that keeps getting blows from all sides, whether its programme managers disrespecting their listeners with celebrities on radio thinking it’ll aid up numbers or the online radio stations that keep popping up every two minutes, this medium has seen it all.

So, recently there’s been a public spat between station owner, T-Bo Touch and presenter Glen Lewis about his sacking from Touch HD, it got black Twitter really excited – I mean we love drama. Lewis has since on joined Radio 2000 along with former Metro FM sports presenter, Robert Marawa.

A couple of weeks ago MSG Afrika owned station, Capricorn FM made a new line-up announcement. The Limpopo based station has a new breakfast show featuring Skhumbuzo Mbatha and Kea Motlokwa. In the same breath, Capricorn FM’s sister station, Power987 (Power FM) saw the announcement that the new boss in the office, former Kaya FM breakfast host, Bob Mabena will take over the talk station’s breakfast slot.

Meanwhile, Comedienne, Tumi Morake left Jacaranda FM after just a few months as the co-host of the breakfast show with Martin Bester. Morake has a lot to say about her departure from the Kagiso Media-owned station, and it’s not good. I knew she wasn’t going to last, only a few black people would. The station is NOT black presenters friendly. We all know it.

Now we wait for the new radio season for some drama and all that comes with it.

702’s Stephen Grootes Calls It a Day

Around 6pm last night (15 March 2018), Talk Radio 702 announced on their Facebook page that long time reporter and talk show host, Stephen Grootes is calling it quits. Grootes has been at the helm at Primedia for 16 years. He started as an EWN political reporter, went on to host The Midday Report With Stephen Grootes. Late last year when renowned journalist and broadcaster, Xolani Gwala announced that he’ll be taking a break from radio to focus on his health (he announced he was diagnosed with colon cancer), Stephen was moved to the breakfast slot, taking over from Gwala, he is currently hosting the drive time slot where he’ll hang his headphone come mid April.

This announcement has sparked a lot of speculations on who could be taking over the leading talk radio’s drive time slot. Is Xolani Gwala coming back? Could Eusebius McKaiser be taking over the show? There’s a lot of those questions doing the rounds, and we’ll have to wait for Primedia to make a formal announcement on who they see fit for the second prominent slot on radio.

Phat Joe Leaves East Coast Radio

After only a year at the helm of the drive time slot at East Coast Radio, TV and radio personality, Phat Joe (whose real name is Majota Kambule) has left the Durban based station.

Phat Joe’s exit comes after the wake of him being unveiled as the host of the upcoming dating reality show on Vuzu, Take Me Out Mzansi. When Kambule took over the predominant slot last year, he was followed by a petition to have him removed following “inappropriate” comments that offended a lot of listeners.

As a result of his unapologetic eye popping comments, Phat Joe was earlier this year hauled before the BCCSA where he was fined R30 000 for down syndrome comments made while on air.

We all know Phat Joe has a big mouth, putting him on a platform where he is expected to pretend to be what and who he’s not is a bit…well, ya!

In the meantime, the station hasn’t announced Majota’s replacement, it is expected to make an announcement soon though.

Bongani Bingwa Takes Over From Redi Tlhabi

Talk Radio 702 on Thursday (29 June 2017) saw renowned talk radio host and long time journalist, Redi Tlhabi hosting her final show at the station.

Tlhabi announced her departure just a few months after coming back from a 6 months maternity leave. Upon her return from leave, Redi was appointed the new host of the drive time slot.

The columnist and author is headed to the USA to persue a scholarship from 2018. Former 702 newsreader and Night Talk host, Bongani Bingwa has been announced as Redi’s replacement.

Bingwa is an experienced broadcast journalist who has been at Mnet’s investigative show, Carte Blanche for more than a decade now.

I hope this does not mark the end of Redi’s broadcasting career because she’s a BRILLIANT radio host, It’s been an interesting 12 years of analysis on issues affecting people in South Africa by Mrs Tlhabi. She’ll be missed and appreciated for holding the powers that be to account on various topics.

Farewell Redi Tlhabi, I wish you all the best in the US and your work.

Rob Vember Hangs His KFM Headphones

Longtime radio personality, Rob Vember is leaving KFM. The witty host of the drive time show hasn’t stated why he’s leaving the Primedia Broadcasting-owned station. It is rumoured that Vember was not happy and had been for a while.

From the 3rd of July, the 947 Breakfast Xpress presenter and stand-up comedian, Darren “Whackhead” Simpson will take over the KFM breakfast show. At the same time, Simpson will remain at the drive show slot at 947.

Why doesn’t KFM/Primedia Broadcasting get someone deserving for either 947 drive or KFM breakfast? I mean to me it doesn’t make sense that Darren will be hosting 2 shows on two sister stations. I’m almost certain there’s a presenter(s) who was eyeing and deserving of the slot.

Carl Wastie will take over from Rob Vember, while Ryan O’Connor will be moved to the 10:00 – 13:00 time slot. Sechaba G will host the show after Ryan’s.

Rob Vember left SABC’s 5FM in 2013 when he moved down to Cape Town, he then joined KFM the following year.

While on the radio and Primedia Broadcasting tip, 947 stand-in presenter, Poppy Ntshongwana recently joined Touch HD, while former YFM presenter Ayanda MVP replaced Zama Dube at Primedia’s money-spinner station.

Radio Year: New Update

Every radio year, things get heated as most radio stations announce the new year’s line-up. This year things have been way beyond crazy. Just last week, long time Metro FM presenter, Glen Lewis quit, now his former co-host, Unathi Msengana announced her departure from the station. Lewis left Metro to join TouchHD, it is still unclear where Unathi is going.

Still on that quitting note, the Big Dawg, DJ Fresh has also bid 5FM farewell, after over eleven years at the station. Fresh was moved from the drive time slot to the breakfast home in 2014 after Gareth Cliff’s departure. He is joining Metro FM to replace Glen Lewis and Unathi Msengana.

Some more radio news: It is now confirmed, former child star, Cecelia, who now prefers to be called by her first name, Hulisani Ravele is making a “radio come back”. Ravele is joining Limpopo’s only commercial station, Capricorn FM.

Quitting: On The Wireless

It was confirmed by several publications last week that long time Metro FM jock, Glen Lewis has hang up his headphones at the SABC’s biggest commercial station. Lewis is joining the recently relaunched online radio station owned by another former Metro FM jock, T-Bo Touch. It is rumoured that Glen Lewis will co-host a show with funny woman Nina Hastie.

In other radio news, former YoTV presenter and child star, Hulisani Cece Ravele hinted that she’s making a radio comeback. This follows the stint she had at 5FM back in the day. She used to be an entertainment reporter on Euphonik’s show on Sundays. Many tried to get Hulisani to talk about where she’s heading, but the Sowetan wouldn’t say a word. It is suspected though that she might be replacing Masechaba Ndlovu who recently announced that she resigned at Power FM.

Still on quitting, former Lotus FM presenter, Neville Pillay who recently “walked out” of the SABC’s embattled Indian station has found a new home at Joburg’s number one hit station, 947. Neville has been hosting the breakfast show as the station heads closer to the line-up change that will see Anele taking over the breakfast show from April.

Frankie du Toit ditches 5FM for 947

Just less than a year at 5FM, Frankie du Toit is leaving the SABC station to join Primedia’s 947. Just over a year ago du Toit left Jacaranda FM for 5FM.

His move to 5FM was a bit questionable, the station is no longer relevant, and numbers don’t lie. It is reported that Frankie is going to co-host the 947 breakfast show with fan favourite, Anele Mdoda. This follows a recently announced lineup change at 947. This will see Anele moving to the breakfast show, while Darren “Whackhead” Simpson will occupy the afternoon drive slot.

5FM recently also lost its long time DJ, record producer and businessman, Themba Nkosi affectionately known as Euphonik. Themba’s move followed the departure of another long time DJ, Poppy Ntshongwana. All the DJs mentioned above left 5FM for 947.

Is 947 poaching 5FM DJs?

Eminent Line-up Change at 947

Rumours have been doing the rounds for a few days now regarding Anele Mdoda and her radio slot. It is now confirmed that Ravi Naidoo is shaking up the 947 line-up. It was reported recently by Zalebs that Anele Mdoda, who’s currently the drive time host at 947 will be joining Kagiso Media owned station, Jacaranda FM (Kagiso Media also owns Zalebs.com), but now we know that was just a click-bait.

Miss Mdoda started her career at Tuks FM, then joined 94.7 Highveld Stereo (which was later re-branded to simply 947), she later joined 5FM, after just 3 years at the national station, co-hosting a midday show with Grant Nash, Anele “went back home” to 947 as the host of their drive time slot.

It is now confirmed that from the 3rd of April 2017, Anele will be swapping the 15:00-19:00 slot for the 06:00-09:00 one, while comedian and radio host Darren “Whackhead” Simpson (who currently hosts the  Breakfast Xpress) will be taking over from Anele.

I’m not really sure how I feel about this move, Darren is a bit too loud to be driving people home, but then so is Roger Goode over at 5FM. I guess this is a new trend of putting loud white male presenters at the helm of drive time slots. I’ll really miss Anele in the afternoons…

John Robbie Calls it a Day!

After many years of waking up with Gauteng residents, radio veteran, John Robbie is hanging up his headphones. According to the 702 website, the jock that has been steering the Talk Radio 702 breakfast show for over 15 years is set to retire after turning 61. John Robbie has been with Primedia’s 702 for more than 30 years.

The 702 line-up has seen numerous changes over the past few years, and recently, the station bid farewell to long time presenter, Sam Cowen. This saw former actress and producer (Azania Mosaka Show, The Midday Report With Stephen Grootes and many others), Phemelo Motene taking over the station’s weekend breakfast, while actress and personality, Relebogile Mabotja took over the pre-breakfast show.

From the 9th of January 2017, the much experienced, long time journalist and drive time host, Xolani Gwala will take over the breakfast show, while the very opinionated and feisty host, Redi Tlhabi will take over the drive time slot. Columnist, analyst and author, Eusebius Mckaiser will stay on, to permanently fill in Redi’s shoes.

Interesting times on the horizon await for 702 listeners and presenters. I’m yet to digest the Xolani move, i think he is perfect for the drive time slot. I guess we’ll have to wait and see how all this pans out.

702 bids Sam Cowen Farewell, 3 “new” hosts introduced

So, let me let you in on the latest in the crazy world of radio broadcasting. There, by corner 702 and talk station avenue, a new line-up has been brewing for some time now and it has finally been made public. The station is bidding seasoned Primedia (702 and 947) presenter Sam Cowen farewell. Cowen has been co-hosting the weekend breakfast with Africa Melane, who’s also exiting the station. Africa will continue hosting the weekend breakfast on 702’s sister station, Cape Talk.

So, guess who’s taking over from Sam and Africa? **rubs hands together with a smile**. Azania’s producer and former actress Phemelo Motene. Yaz last time I checked she was a Ngcobo? But not according to 702’s website, asiphume lapho. Phemelo is very GOOD as a talk show host, I’ve heard her a number of times standing in for Azania, so that slot is fitting for her. Personality, Relebogile Mabotsha will take over the pre-breakfast slot, while Lovelyn Nwadey who has been doing the Friday version of Gugz Mhlungu and Sizwe Dhlomo’s show is another addition to the talk station’s family.

**sigh** Sam was really not going anywhere with her weekend breakfast slot. I’m glad she realised this and decided to hang her headphones (if that’s what happened). There’s just one person I wish would also call it a day, I won’t say who though ;).

Radio: Who’s Moving Where?

Over the past couple of months, a lot has happened in the radio world. From Bridget’s move from Jacaranda FM to Kaya FM to DJ Euphonik and DJ Milkshake announcing hanging their 5FM mics. This is just the tip of what has been happening in the world of this beautiful broadcasting medium.

Bridget Masinga made a radio comeback last year August by joining Jacaranda FM, just after a year at the Kagiso Media owned station, Masinga announced her departure to her fans on social media. Bridget is joining the Rosebank based Kaya FM, alongside rapper Pro Verb and radio darling and  Unathi Msengana’s husband, Thomas Msengana.

Meanwhile, it has recently been confirmed that Euphonik and DJ Milkshake will be leaving SABC’s 5FM after a number of years at the station. Euphonik is joining 947 **sigh**

In other news…

Apart from those who are changing their radio homes, former Metro FM’s drive time host, Tbo Touch teamed up with the controversial Gareth Cliff to launch “South Africa’s first 24 hour online music station”. TouchCentral went on air as the country was celebrating Spring Day.

I’m still unsure about whether the world of online radio will survive especially if online is competing with analogue, seeing that data is so expensive in South Africa. When will the fight for cheaper internet access be achieved? Another mystery…

Jacaranda FM’s Frankie Joins 5FM

Long time Jacaranda FM presenter, Frankie Du Toit is joining affluent national radio station, 5FM. Frankie has been with the Kagiso Media owned station for about 8 years now. With last year’s line-up change at the independent station, came Frankie’s move from the 10am – 1pm slot to 10pm – 01am, making way for Bridget Masinga who currently occupy the slot. Frankie currently co-hosts the show with television and radio presenter, Kriya Gangiah. He is set to start at 5FM at the end of the month/beginning of June.

Jacaranda FM is also expected to make a line-up change for the 2016/17 year in August, as the station’s fight to target more black listeners rages on. Leaving the station alongside Frankie to 5FM is The Complimentary Breakfast sport presenter, Robbie Kruse. Jacaranda’s line-up change should be a very interesting one…

Azania Takes Over Sam Cowen’s Show

Radio goddess Miss Azania Mosaka, who recently left baby station Power FM to join 702 is making big strides at the station. She’s reportedly taking over the 702 13:00 – 15:00 weekdays show previous hosted by Jenny Crwys-Williams, the show is now hosted by Primedia’s old timer Sam Cowen. Apparently Sam is moving to weekends, what I’m not sure of is whether she’s going to co-host with Africa Melane or moving to a new slot. Fun times on radio I tell you, yesterday Jacaranda FM announced its new line-up and the Afrikaans community is not chuffed at all. Back to 702, I think it’s time their line-up reflects that this is an African country. Yes! I’m also on that tip!

It was just a matter of time before Azania got her own show. I mean we all know she’s kind of a big deal on SA radio, she’s loved, she’s a brand and she’s AZANIA, great move Primedia.

Bridget Masinga Joins Jacaranda FM

So…This has BEEN “killing” me for a good week or two now because I know things LOL. Today Jacaranda FM has confirmed that television presenter and former Miss South Africa runner-up Bridget Masinga will be joining the station, and get this she’s not just joining the station but she’s going to be on weekdays from the 3rd of August 2015. This as the station tries to attract more people of colour. Today Jacaranda announced a line-up change, Kriya Gangiah will no longer co-host “The Lounge” with Cassy Clarke. Cassy will now host the show alone. Here’s a new line-up

06:00 – 09:00 Complimentary Breakfast
9:00 – 12:00 Bridget Masinga

12:00 – 16:00 The Workzone with Barney Simon

16:00 – 19:00 The Martin Bester Drive

19:00 – 22:00 The Lounge with Cassy Clarke
22:00 – 01:00 The Late Show with Kriya and Frankie

06:00 – 10:00 Frankie and Kriya

10:00 – 12:00 Jacaranda Top 20 with Cassy Clarke

12:00 – 16:00 Lundi Khoisan

16:00 – 20:00 Shaun Lukhele

20:00 – 00:00 House Party with DJ Jazzy D

Reflecting: Taking a Step Back

A LOT has happened since the last time I posted in here. Let me take you back a little: the MTN Radio Awards took place a few months ago at the Sandton Convention Centre, for those who don’t know yet, the South African mobile operator MTN has pulled the plug on the awards. I have no idea what this means for the future of the awards. Remember when MTN pulled out of the SAMAs? Thixo let’s hope this is not the last time I get to write about the awards.

Radio changes happened at big stations across the rainbow land, as it is the case every year. This saw new kid on the block 5FMs Nick Hamman kicking Sureshnie Rider’s butt as the host of the station’s top 40 chart show. Does this mean Mrs Rider is on her way out? Oh oh, before all that KB bid the station farewell a month or two before the changes. Anathi Seyisi is now on air 5 days a week on YFM. So proud of my bae-friend. Catch her between midnight and 3am.

It’s been confirmed (sort of) that DJ Sbu is starting his own radio station following the boot at Metro FM. All the best Mr 2020. There’s no denying that Sbu is a real hustler, I respect his ‘struggle’. Speaking of Metro FM, did I tell you that they now have almost all of Mzansi’s A-listers on their line-up? Pearl Modiadie, Lerato Kganyago, Sammy Sosa, MoFlava and others LMAO, you know when there’s an event and they only mention the important acts then say ‘and many more’ at the end? I just had that moment there LOL, please allow.

Anywho all those personalities are now Metro FM family. There’s been SO much happening while I was away, I cannot get through everything, but will sure keep you on the loop. Say no to those weird soup combos they could be deadly, keep warm.

5FM Suspends Two DJs

It has emerged that two of the Fresh@5 breakfast team have been suspended, this follows comments made by DJ Sol Phenduka on the “fresh and vrot” feature. It is not clear who the other DJ is. Many listeners took to social media to voice their anger about Sol’s comment regarding a family that was hacked to death by an axe in Stellenbosch. Sol has since apologised to the listeners on Twitter. All I have to say is interesting times ahead awaits us

Azania Joins Talk Radio 702

Recently Azania Mosaka announced her departure from a new kid on the block, Power FM. Mosaka gave the excuse of wanting to focus her attention and energy more on her business which is demanding, but today it has emerged that the Sowetan has joined Talk Radio 702. The programmes manager made an announcement on Instagram welcoming her on the station. She will be co-hosting the weekend breakfast show which is currently hosted by Afrika Melane down in Cape Town.

I knew her excuse for leaving Power FM was too cliché, word in the corridors is, she had contract issues with her bosses at the station like other personalities that left before her. I’m glad I still have to have time with her (on radio of course. I’m definitely a happy fan.

Azania Bids Power FM Farewell

It has been reported today by the Mail and Guardian that former Metro FM presenter Azania Mosaka has resigned at Power FM and today’s show was her last. The bubbly radio jock joined the station on its inception last year in June and was hosting a show called “Power Lunch”. According to M&G, Mosaka quit to focus her energy on her business interests. Azania’s business is apparently demanding more and more of her time as it grows. I’d like to wish her all the best, hopefully this doesn’t mean she’s going to disappear from our airwaves for good, she has quite a following and it would really be sad for such great talent to just vanish from our radio radar permanently.

Joburg’s Hot 91.9 FM Goes Live

Joburg’s newest adult contemporary radio station is set to go live tomorrow morning at 6am. Hot 91.9 FM is a community station based in Northriding, north of Johannesburg and is set to cover areas such as Randburg, Fourways, Sandton and surrounding communities. The on-air talent includes veterans like Sasha Martinengo and Treasure Tshabalala who both have a mountain of experience on radio. Could this mean a new era in the South African radio fraternity? Well I don’t know, all I know is that I can’t wait to tune in tomorrow morning

(Media Update)

Jenny says Goodbye to Talk Radio 702

After 22 years as a presenter on Talk Radio 702,  Jenny Crwys-Williams is bowing out. Best known for her book reviews and food and lifestyle features, Crwys-Williams says at the end of the year she will be leaving the show that she’s hosted since 1992, but will still do a book feature on the station. Rumour has it that she’ll be continuing her book feature on a weekly basis on Redi Tlhabi’s show.

Sam Cohen will take over the show. Cohen started her career at Talk Radio 702 but has since spent the past 18 years with Primedia sister station 94.7 Highveld Stereo.

(ANN7 and Talk Radio 702)

Leigh-Ann Bids CliffCentral Farewell

After just six months at Gareth Cliff’s brain child CliffCentral, Leigh-Ann Mol is leaving. Regarded as Gareth’s radio wife, Leigh-Ann has announced her departure from the station after working for years with Gareth on 5FM and recently relocating with him to his online baby. Her departure is all for the good reasons says Gareth, according to YOU Magazine Leigh-Ann is leaving the big bad city of Johannesburg to settle in Cape Town with her man as she tries to shift focus from radio to her company, Mala Media. All I can say is I’m going to miss her realness, she never pretended just to fit in, she was always that woman who spoke openly about her love for the bottle, loved that about her.

I’ll drink to that “Leigh-Ass”

New show on eNCA for Siki Mgabadeli

Renowned business and financial journalist Siki Mgabadeli has a new show on the cards. The radio and television host is no stranger to eNCA viewers as she has successfully hosted The Big Debate both on eNCA and eTV. Siki will now host a new business show on the channel (the name of the show has not been made public yet). It makes sense for the channel to pick Siki after her previous work with the station and her brand. The show will be half an hour and will go live from the 1st of October at 21:00

Details of the show have been kept under wraps for now.

MTN Radio Awards

Last night the MTN Radio Awards took place at the Sandton Convention Ballroom, where the splendid awards ceremony celebrated the voices behind the mics that we listen to on a daily basis.

Stations like Umhlobo Wenene, Talk Radio 702 and SAFM were among the biggest winners of the night. East Coast Radio’s Zaba and Highveld Stereo/KFM presenter Alex Jay were the host of the evening, and from what I hear, they did a splendid job.
Congrats to all the winners.

Radio News: The Wait Is Over

The wait is over, today I just learned that Warras the Shady Lurker and Tumi Voster have found a new home at 5FM. 5FM management confirmed today after Warras left YFM and Voster’s chop at the station. Congratulations guys!!
Big ups! 😉

Radio! Radio! Radio!

It’s been a while since I’ve touched base with you guys, and since the last post A LOT has happened in my life and in the radio sector/industry as well. Where does one begin…? Okay I think I’ll start with 5FM…

Gareth Cliff and his team (Mabale Moloi, Leigh-Ann Mol & Damon Kalvari) surprised EVERYONE, I mean literally everyone who’s a radio lover, especially 5FM Morning’ With Gareth Cliff fans by dropping a bombshell of the year, announcing their departure from the station after 10 full years of great music, controversial comments and really, great radio. I must say I never saw this one coming, it felt like my lover was breaking up with me, I was that loyal listener. Now that Gareth and company have left 5, a guessing game called “Where Is Gareth” has been taking place on Twitter since the departure…one can only wonder and guess where Gareth is headed from here.

In some more radio news, Bonang Matheba, Sizwe Dhlomo, Siya Ngwekazi, Thando Thabethe and Warras all left YFM, it is rumored that one of the 5 is joining 5FM. Personally I don’t think any of them have the 5FM factor, they just don’t fit in..oh Bonang joint Metro FM, which again I think is a bad move for someone of her stature.

I must say I was a lil’ excited when all the guys announced the break away from YFM, it gave me hope that maybe this is my big break on radio LOL, whether that is true remains to be seen and heard. 😉

Thinking Out Loud

Have you ever felt so down that you actually got mad at almost everyone trying to engage in a conversation with you? Well that’s me right now (6 Oct 13:05), sometimes I feel so down, death is the only thing that makes sense. I feel so empty like things can never get any worse.

This is a kind of feeling I have to go through almost one or twice every two weeks or so, I’ve even self diagnosed myself with depression. The hardest part right now is seeking help, going out there and telling someone that “my life is falling apart and I need help” is really terrifying believe it or not. The kind of feeling I’m feeling now is that of “the world is not a better place for you” feeling, it’s sad I know, but writing it works better for me than to go and discuss it with some stranger.

You might notice that I said this is a recurring feeling, so writing it down is not really helping me with anything, well your probably right ’cause if my experiences don’t help me, they will most definitely help someone else out there, wich is a good thing.

If after reading that you see yourself in me, well there’s a lot you can do, I might be struggling right now emotionally, but music has always been there for me, if it wasn’t for music, probably I would have committed suicide years ago. So I’m grateful to music and music makers (musicians) for saving myself from self destruction. Oh this was just me thinking out loud (not literally) but this is one of those deep thoughts that goes through my mind when I’m alone in the dark

A Mix Bag Of Radio DJ’s

According to JunkMail’s Blog there are 6 South African radio DJ’s to listen to that will sure make your radio listening experience pleasurable, with 3 of those DJ’s coming from the same station (5FM). Many people listen to radio mostly in the morning on their way to work or school, and in the afternoon on their way home from work or school. Apparently it’s not about which radio station you listen to, but it’s which DJ to listen to, that’ll make radio listening fun and edgy. The following are 6 DJ’s JunkMail suggested you should give your time and ears to
1. Gareth Cliff (5FM Mornings 6am-9am) is one of the most controversial radio DJ’s S.A has seen in a while, his controversy has lended him in hot water a couple of times, but he’s still as upront as ever, and THAT makes his show enjoyable as there’s NEVER a dull moment.
2. Rob Forbes (The Rob Forbes Show 9am-midday) recently left campus radio TuksFM for a big shot station 5FM to spread his wings, and that he has done, his dry sense of humor and interactive topics and games coupled with great studio guests, he has proven himself that he has staying power. He also has gained a lot of following since he started at 5FM
3. Rian Van Heerden (Rian’s Show 6am-9am) is also one of TuksFM’s pride who is doing very well for himself at JacarandaFM with an Afrikaans flair to spice things up, Rian’s experience in radio has secured him the love and respect he so much deserves.
4. Barney Simons (Barney Simon’s Show 13:00-16:00) is the original member of Radio 5, now known as 5FM who was/is famous for his Rock & Roll shows that got Rock lovers rocking on…After leaving 5FM he went back to TuksFM, then later joined JacarandaFM where he’s currently hosting the 1 to 4pm slot, with his experience, who am I to argue with JunkMail’s suggestion to check this guy’s show out?
5. Anele Mdoda (Highveld’s Afternoon drive with Anele16:00-19:00) yet ANOTHER oner of TuksFM’s pride, Anele left TuksFM to Join Highveld Stereo in the early 2000’s, THEN left Highveld Stereo to join 5FM. After just 3 years at 5FM, Highveld approached Anele with a deal she couldn’t resist, her afternoon drive show is one of a kind, with Anele’s sense of humor and sarcasm, it is sure a show not to be missed
6. DJ Fresh (The Fresh Drive 15:00-19:00) it wouldn’t be a top6 without DJ Fresh in the mix, there’s really nothing much to say about Fresh apart from the fact that this guy IS radio.
For a guy like me who’s obsessed with radio, I struggle to choose which DJ to listen to. If the above list does not ‘apply’ to you, it’s fine, it is one person’s view either way, but I couldn’t agree more with the list…
Keep listening 😉

5FM Silences 4 Voices…

Finally 5FM decided to get rid of the weaklings in their camp by renewing their line-up, yes this happens every year but its been a while since four people were canned all at once if it ever happed on the station. The station’s management decided to give Jon Savage, C-live, Jola and Elma Smit a boot…and man is this a great move, Jon , Jola and C-live were never my favourite and I’ve never kept this a secret. But Elma?? That lady made sure I never missed her show, I think letting her go was a mistake, did they let her go or was it the other way round? Anyways it’s not my place to speculate. I guess congratulations are in order to the 3 new voices at 5, Miss Cosmo, Justin and Stephanie B. Change is never easy, but it’s inevitable. I still say watch out I might be next!! *slow laugh*

My Diary

We all have those “I almost broke up with him/her” moments, just because they decide to play dumb…or they are dumb you just don’t see it. I almost broke up with my partner because she was so mean and heartless on our chats last night, then ignored me the entire day, then later thought say “hello babe” would change how hurt and stupid I felt when she said all those hurting words,I decided to give us a final shot because I believe in us and the power of love, but seriously I’ve lost faith and I’m now holding my feelings back because pouring your heart out for someone then have that very someone come and step on the heart they were suppose to nuture and love is THE most painful thing ever. We’ll see how far love all can take us…

In My Untamed Opinion…

Others say there’s never a dull moment in South Africa and others are saying we are just a troubled teenage country…with all the rapes, murders and high profile cases that have caught the attention of the world one can say “we are in deep kak”. The recent or should I say VERY recent story to make headlines around the world is this of Olympian/Paralympian Oscar Pistorius allegedly killing his model girlfriend at his place in Pretoria. Remember this is just MY opinion neh? Good, people murder people everyday in our country but it doesn’t make international headlines, is this one different because there’s a “star” involved? If so what does that tell you about international news channels and their authenticity to bringing about change and justice to those who have been victimized? All this is just cheap trading and cheap propaganda. Our very own local news channels are also promoting this because they are international to someone somewhere in the world. As a journalist myself I try by all means to push for equality and justice to those who deserve it, but I can’t do it alone…I wish this case can just be concluded in a manner that people/families concerned can find peace and clossure. S.A justice system should STOP dragging such cases for years just because high profile people are involved, that’s another thing that should come to an end, unfortunately things are different and won’t happen in a way that I would want them to happen, but then again they will happen…in time

Anything And Everything

I know this is a bit late for the “Happy new year’s” and stuff, but can I just be allowed to wish YOU yes YOU a happy new year? Well it’s my blog after all LOL …anyway this is my first blog/rather let me say my thoughts since my previous ones last year. I know that my thoughts won’t change the price of the bread or the forever rising petrol price, but I do know that they are MY thoughts and no one should feel attacked or belittled by ’em, if anything you should try to feel what I feel when updating this blog. Okay I know this doesn’t make sense but it will once you realise that this is my personal venting space. Anywho I got a feeling that this year is going to be a great one, so I wish you all the things you wish for yourself and more, and I promise to be more active around here 😉

World AIDS Day

World AIDS day is known as a day to bring about awereness & change to the pendemic around the world, there’s an estimation of about 8 million people in South Africa alone living with this disease, now I think it’s safe to say everyone know about the disease, symptons to look for and how to treat it for a long heathly life. The problem now is the stigma that surrounds the pandemic, how do we change the mindsets of those that choose to be ignorant about this serious issue?…okay, wait a minute we do know that this is the second biggest killer in our country right? I just had to make you aware of that in a rhetorical question format. Now back to the stigma and the importance of this day, as I’ve said this day is VERY important in highlighting issues that people face on a daily basis in also making people to think twice when it comes to having sex (I’m not saying HIV is only contracted through sex). I won’t divulge much on details as I believe we all know them, but I’d like to say this though it shouldn’t only be today (01 December) that we think of HIV/AIDS and all the heartache that comes along with it but it should be our lifestyles to know our statuses and work towards remaining negative if we are negative, or live positively if we are positive. The moral of the story is to know your facts, get tested & make sound decisions…now let’s go get tested *one love*

Why Is He On Radio?

5FM has a format of “Power Nights” on Monday nights right through to Thursdays where each day has a show dedicated to a certain genre of music, there’s one show in particular that i’d like to shine a spotlight on, the “Power Night Of Rock” it needs no explanation, the name says it all. It’s a very interesting show to say the least, dedicated to rock music which is a great thing since I’m a rockstar at heart, but the host of the show Jon Savage inspired this post. Here’s my two cents worth of his presenting style, he’s very whack he is by far the most BORING radio presenter EVER, cringe worthy typa awkwardness, he is such a yawn fest. Don’t get me wrong he knows his stuff as far as rock music is concerned, I mean he’s a lead singer of one of the commercially successful S.A rock band “Cassette” but personally I think he should just stick to singing & producing…not everyone is cut out to be an a radio presenter as is in this case. I’m very strict on who I choose to influence my thoughts, taste of music etc.

Azania’s Total Bliss

She is Mzansi’s radio sweetheart with a voice that captivates and excites the ear. Azania Mosaka presents “Total Bliss” on Metro FM (09:00-12:00). Many listen not only for the music but for her captivating voice as well, now back to the issue at hand, I personally think the music that is played on her show is not doing justice to the show, in fact I think the music is total crap. They feed us American junk music for 3 hours everyday, but it seems like people love junk because they keep going back for more. A little bit of variety in content and music would be great, I’ll be blatant on this one less of that Junk they call music would be a start of something new not only for her show but for the station as a whole…remember folks this is MY view and I’m NEVER biased, well at least I try not to be. Xoxo

What’s Your Purpose In Life?

We often hear people or rather we all know the saying “When life hands you lemons, make lemonade” but what does this REALLY mean? According to my understanding this means that one should always use opportunities given to them, but what if the opportunity given is not what you hoped for or you have no idea how to execute that opportunity to benefit you?…well here’s what I think, when life hands you lemons, you don’t make lemonade, you make orange juice and leave everyone else wondering how you’ve done, by this I mean when a chance presents itself all you have to do is sit down and think of another way of getting what you want out of what is offered or already there. Still confused? What I’m trying to say or the point I’m trying to put across here is that when we do what is expected of us, we become the statistics because we want to impress, try and do what is NOT expected of you in a positive way though to satisfy YOU, that way no one will forget your name and your purpose in life

We Are Failing Our Own Talent

With so many international acts flocking into our country, how many of our own acts are crowding the international scene? I have no doubt about the talent we have in South Africa and Africa as a whole, but why are our artists not getting international gigs like their American and British counterparts? Maybe they are, maybe I’m the one in the dark here. If this is this the way the industry is treating what we call ‘our own’…what are WE doing to change it?

I feel very strong about this topic, and I know I’m not the only one. NO!!! I’m NOT hating on international artists I’m just trying to stir a boiling pot. Another thing about American and British artists is, they have great teams behind them, especially marketing wise, but that raises a question again; Don’t we have marketing geniuses in this country? Either way we need to do something about the arts in this country, and we need to start investing in our own talent.

You don’t really need the gym…

Ladies & gents,we all know that weight is an issue around the world and working out is ussually the last resort to people that really have to be working out, well I have great news for you…very phatty great news. The recent study that was conducted at Aberdeen University by lead researcher Stuart Gray shows that a 2 and a half minute intense workout is as effective as a 90 minute workout at the gym, this gets to show that we don’t really need the gym/spending hours in the gym. Not only that, the recent study also shows that a 2 minute sprint is as effective as a 30 minute jog. Now there’s no excuse of being unhealthy & chubby this summer…let’s get working out people!! *peace*
